Jane Birch is the author of Discovering the Word of Wisdom: Surprising Insights from a Whole Food, Plant-based Perspective. Published in 2013, the book has now sold over 10,000 copies around the world. Jane is a passionate advocate for both a whole food, plant-based approach to the Word of Wisdom and also for respecting every person's agency to interpret D&C 89 in a way that feels right to them. Jane regularly speaks on the Word of Wisdom to audiences in Utah and has spoken to groups in Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. She has written well over a hundred articles on the Word of Wisdom for Meridian Magazine. Her website,Discovering the Word of Wisdom, regularly features Latter-day Saints who share their stories of "discovering" the Word of Wisdom and the miracles that have resulted in their lives. Her website also provides support for every topic needed to both get started and be successful on a whole food, plant-based diet. Jane leads Facebook groups on the Word of Wisdom, including the Discovering the Word of Wisdom Support Group. Jane is thrilled to be the guest speaker at the Discovering the Word of Wisdom Cruise in 2019 and is looking forward to getting to know and interact with each participant. She is dedicated to making this an excellent experience where we can all learn from each other and get motivated about taking good care of our "body temples."
Jane Birch graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in History and a PhD in Instructional Science. She currently serves as Assistant Director for Faculty Development at the Faculty Center. She supports the amazing faculty at BYU in their efforts to combine religious faith with their professional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship and citizenship.
Possible presentation classes during the cruise: Discovering the Word of Wisdom: How the power of a whole food, plant-based diet can help us to see the Lord's counsel in D&C 89 Practical Steps for Transitioning to a Whole Food, Plant-based Diet Strategies for Long-term Success on a Whole Food, Plant-based Diet Doctrine, Principles, and Applications of the Word of Wisdom A Revelation for our Day: Given in the 19th century for the 21st century Taking Care of our Body Temples
Learning to Eat Whole Food, Plant-based No Oil on a Cruise Ship The ship will of course have many food options, and part of the learning experience of this cruise will be learning to navigate making the best choices possible during the time we are together. The cruise staff are not trained in preparing whole food, plant-based (WFPB) foods, but we will do everything we can before and during the cruise to see that our group has the most WFPB options as possible. We will encourage all group participants to make the best choices, but we will also respect whatever choices participants make during our time together. No pressure (unless you want it)!
